Education Education is a business too, and the buildings need to be economical
in construction and maintenance. Our school and college buildings are
bright places to learn and to teach. The Worcester and Clayesmore buildings
were completed around 2003 for around £1000 per sq m plus VAT, which
shows that interesting buildings need not be out of reach. The Worcester Hospital Education Centre was won in competition and the
built design is 90% as conceived. The curved areas of the plan are practical
allowing the building to fit a tight site and create interesting spaces.
The Library is circular with a circular gallery, sited over the main
lecture theatre with full disabled access partly via the ramped and circular
museum! Clayesmore School is working through a major programme of new buildings,
started with the Prep School Headmaster's house; the Jubilee Building
for sciences and computer studies, with learning support in the attic
areas which include a lecture theatre; the new Spinney Building for classrooms
and staff facilities. Forthcoming projects include new prep school classrooms. Sandroyd School's building programme started with the pre-prep school
in the Walled Garden where the scale of the building is low, and a gentle
atmosphere has been created. |
